Ellen van Neerven

Ellen van Neerven is an Indigenous Australian writer who works across a range of genres including fiction and poetry.

Van Neerven’s award-winning first book, Heat and Light, was published in 2014 by the University of Queensland Press. This piece of fiction is set over three parts, ‘Heat’, ‘Water’ and ‘Light’, over which traditional storytelling is given a contemporary twist.

Heat and Light was the recipient of the David Unaipon Award, the Dobbie Literary Award, and was shortlisted for a number of prizes, including The Stella Prize, the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, the Queensland Literary Awards, and the Readings Prize.

Van Neerven’s second creative work, a book of poetry titled Comfort Food, was published in late May, 2016.

Beyond being a writer, Van Neerven also worked at the State Library of Queensland as manager of the black&write! program, which aims to support and foster Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers and editors.
